A night out with cars and Moms

Yes you don’t usually hear of mom’s going out to gawk at cars…shoes, handbags, celebrities…yes ofcourse. Cars…not so much. Last week I was invited to the Toronto Auto Show by General Motors and Chevrolet, an  invite  I garnered by being  part of the fabulous Masalamommas fan club. Now as some of you know, this  girl is a superficial lover of cars. It’s all about colour, pizzazz and comfort. I’m a city girl and very rarely would you find me in a car and when you do… it’ll never be in the driver’s seat. Despite dreaming  about driving and owning a quirky slime green  (yes! you read that right!) set of wheels  since I was thirteen, I never did get around to getting my license. Don’t you worry though.. I  can drive people crazy. Easily!

We had a fabulous evening starting at a private room at E11even where Masalamommas and their guests mingled over fine wine and hor d’oeuvres . Next up we were given a  private tour of the Chevrolet arena and there’s quite a few things that were highlighted. Things I never really thought about before….but should as a mom. Leg room, swanky fabrics, technology and colour palette are still important, but so is safety, trunk space and peace of mind.

Chevrolet had some very cool ideas such as scissor doors on their concept Corvette Stingray and most of their vehicles have technology which pretty much links your car to the  apps on your phone. We’ve all seen the infamous Apple commercials which illustrate how certain apps can help better organize our lives, well now your car can help you do the same. Most parents often have a million things on their mind and most of these reminders pop into memory whilst in the shower or driving.  Tasks related to grocery lists, scheduling doctors visits, arranging car pools and organizing a girls night out are now made easier by being able to insert reminders  by simply speaking to your car! The MyChevrolet app allows users to not only start their cars from the comfort and warmth of their home or office (don’t  worry…your car is still locked and safe from theft!) but will also tell you when it’s time for a tune up or service. Pretty neat huh?

Now as most of us are aware OnStar has previously got celebrities in trouble (Ahem!) but for the most part OnStar can be the best ally. It is impressive that incase you were ever in an emergency situation, be  it theft, accident or even an emergency baby delivery, big  brother OnStar can quickly send rescue missions your way. I’m sure there are myriad stories on how OnStar has helped many stay alive. Now ofcourse, if you were in a life or death situation speeding with a  cop on your tail…well OnStar would stall your car and you would fail your mission. Two sides to every coin right? I’d like to think that OnStar saves more lives than destroys. Peace of mind.

Most of the Chevrolet line up also has split folding seats which make it easier to pile in the hockey gear or large scale toys. Hello IKEA runs! Now don’t worry…there’s plenty of leg room, swanky  and comfortable interiors…and best of all… some really neat colours. The Camaros, Sparks and Malibus did come in some awesome hues… neon yellow, midnight stars or popsicle orange anyone? Time to update my nail polish collection. One must try to match one’s car as much as possible right?

After the Chevrolet tour my brother and I  explored the rest of the show. Highlights included very cool concept cars by BMW and Aston Martin. They sure were beauties! Now…how do I get BMW, Mercedes and Aston Martin to give me a personal tour?

So what do I know about cars? Not much… but I continue to learn and be amazed at the wonderful options available for us.
