Learning about online protection with ESET : Review

ESET software, family friendly ESET, ESET reviewMany of you know how clumsy I am with my technology right? There’s a reason I have a brother who looks after all my upgrades and maintains not only my blog but also my computer, phone and pretty much every gizmo I own. And I own a good many of them. So when I was approached by PTPA (what you don’t know about them? Check them out!) to test out and review the PTPA approved ESET Smart Security 6 Software I decided to give them a whirl. Over the next two months I will be working with ESET to test out their product and will share my thoughts with you.

Disclaimer : This post is part of PTPA’s support of the ESET Software. I received compensation as a thank you token for my review. However, as always all thoughts are totally mine! You know that right?

Antivirus protection programs aren’t very cool or glamorous but I am totally groovin’ to to the ESET mascot. come on.. how cool is he? Very techy cool. Hey it’s about the looks sometimes! Don’t judge!  Moving past the looks, I can tell you that even I was able to easily download and install the program and what do you know… 5 malicious threats were found! No surprise there. While I’ve been told not to speak to strangers or click on random links – I can’t help myself! There’s some good looking links that promise interesting content. Let’s see if ESET dude is going to replace my brother for next two months as I test this program out.

eset2The Anti-Phishing aspects of the ESET software is one of the most attractive features for me at this stage in my life. Cyber criminals send out email links, get us naive and curious folks to clink on fabulously funny graphics and ofcourse keep telling us that they’re going to shut down our PayPal account. Phishing email messages, links and websites are designed to steal our money and private information. I used to get a lot of notices saying my security has been compromised and I should click on an upgrade – that’s when I’d pick up the phone and let my brother take over my computer. That happened last week and you know what – I didn’t call him. I let the ESET dude do his magic! Super easy and peace of mind achieved instantly! In addition I love that when my mom brings over her constantly virus filled USBs to me, the ESET dude can scan external devices as well! HAH! Take that mom!

Another really strong angle ESET promotes is online security for the entire family. The Little Monkey is still a bit too young for me to be concerned about parental controls but given that she lives on YouTube and the many apps we’ve installed, it’s only a matter of time before I’ll be trying to put locks in places to ensure she doesn’t stumble on sites that will lead to questions I’d rather not answer for a few more years! ESET provides a legit Cyber Security Education training portal to their customers and it teaches families how to defend against cyber threats, scams and hackers. They also have a great article (it’s FREE!!) on How to keep your children safer online.

I can’t wait to hear an update! I used to have a license for Eset NOD antivirus and it worked really well.

Phishing attacks are definitely the worst. I recently received a letter in the mail alerting me that my extremely personal info may have been stolen from my work database.
