The Omni William Penn #MurphysDoPittsburgh

speak easy pittsburghDuring our escape without the kids, we stayed at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh and given that the property will soon be celebrating their centennial, we wanted to share our thoughts about this historic property in downtown Pittsburgh. Having flown in on Porter Airlines, we decided to take a bus into downtown Pittsburgh and the Omni was an easy walk from our bus stop – I see why they’re one of the preferred partners for the Porter Escapes packages!

Disclosure : Our stay was hosted by The Omni, but as always, opinions are totally mine!

As I stepped into the lobby I was in total awe. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling and the main lobby was bustling with activity. I was truly taken back to a forgotten era. The four star Omni Hotels pride themselves in preserving history and showcasing the local flavours of the destinations and the William Penn was no exception. Many dignitaries are said to have stayed here and keep returning year after year. The hotel has long been considered the “Grande Dame” of the city and even the locals can be found having meetings and catch up sessions in the lobby.

For me the highlight of the Omni William Penn is the rich history of the building. History buffs will love getting a tour of the place I bet! There’s even a Speakeasy tucked beneath the hotel lobby! One evening, the hubs and I swung by there for a night cap and ended up meeting a couple locals at the bar. The bartenders mixed us some potent craft cocktails and we were transported to the 1920s.  We sat under a tin roof and I kept glancing at the plush scarlet seating as we sat by the bar (with no kids around we made the most of sitting by the bar and chatting with the bartenders who have the best city tips!).  If you’re ever in the area, a visit to the Speakeasy in this 100 year old hotel should be on your list.

omni hotels There’s over 600 rooms at the Omni William Penn and our comfy king bed was just what we needed for our getaway without the kids. The washrooms are on the tiny side but keep in mind that this is an older property. The hallways are long and everything is so grandiose here that I couldn’t help but sneak into every banquet hall!  The Omni William Penn Hotel has many restaurants and while I didn’t have a chance to dine at any of them I did walk into the Terrace Room, to peek at their wall long mural titled “The taking of Fort Pitt”.

My favourite memory of the Omni William Penn Hotel will be of the hubs and I walking into the lobby to head out for dinner only to be greeted by young ladies and gents decked out in ballgowns and tuxedos! In that brief moment, as I looked towards the lobby and saw them partying and dancing, I imagined myself on the set of the Great Gatsby…everything was so regal. The hotel hosts many events for the local community and I was informed that it was a college celebration.

Enjoy staying at Omni William Penn Hotel from March 1 through December 31, 2016 and enjoy 19.16% off their best available rates, a delectable breakfast, “throwback” cocktail and complimentary valet parking. Also don’t forget to sign up for their Select Guest loyalty program which gives you complimentary Wi-Fi. I’d love to visit between March 9th and 11th for their Centennial Celebrations! If your travels take you elsewhere, be sure to check out Omni Hotels and Resorts’ other properties around the U.S and here in Canada.
