Filming with Kids and Zipcar

filming - blogging with zipcarSome families have a car or two and others, like us, own no cars and yet have keys to numerous cars. How? Simple. We’re Zipsters who use Zipcar to get around the city and for our travels. Recently we were asked by Zipcar to share our story and why Zipcar works for us and how we use it and so… we ended up filming with the kids. Little did I know that we had signed up for an entire day of having camera crews in our house and following us along our city adventures!

Filming with kids- behind the scenes with a Zipcar family

Click here to see a 3 minute video that was the end result of a 7 hour day! It was lots of fun filming and definitely gave us a taste of reality tv.

Our Sunday morning (Father’s day mind you!) started out at 9: 00 a.m. when the crew came and set up in our condo. Luckily my mom had come around the day before and tidied up! The hubs and I were interviewed for about an hour and half and as you can imagine, Baby Boy was napping but Little Monkey would come in and out of her room on numerous occasions. We plopped her in front of the ipad with Netflix on and managed to get twenty minutes at a time. The crew were friendly and as you can see, they captured some darling moments with Little Monkey. They caught things I didn’t even notice them filming… like our non existing height chart, the kids playing together and us rushing around getting ready – a bit bizarre (in a good way) watching it all.

I wasn’t sure we’d survive two hours, let alone eight hours with Big Brother watching us but we had lots of fun and after a while didn’t even notice the camera crew following us. The main thing was that we didn’t stress out and rolled along just as we would any other day. We got in our naps when needed, dealt with minor crying fits (which they didn’t capture on video I notice LOL!) and ensured the kids were entertained. Little Monkey and Baby Boy are used to being photographed and video taped by us, so this wasn’t a huge deal for them. In fact they seem to like it better as both, the hubs and I, were involved in the activities vs. one of us shooting footage!

Once we packed up and left the house the adventures began in Liberty Village where we stopped off for a quick lunch and of course I forgot diapers in my rush! Luckily there was a Metro nearby and we secured a few snacks and diapers to get us through the day. With cameras attached to our Ford we Zipped to High Park (sneaking in a nap on our way over) and there we blew bubbles, went on swings and of course popped by to see the animals. A lovely way to spend Father’s Day indeed. Don’t worry we linked up with my dad for dinner later that evening.

On set with zipcarAll in all, a lovely Sunday spent outdoors exploring Toronto with Zipcar, a brand who helps us maintain our pre-baby lifestyle, post-babies. As we shared in the video, Zipcar provides us with the luxury of accessing a vehicle without the hassles and costs associated with traditional car ownership. We’ve Zipped away for weekend getaways (two day minimum depending on miles we’ll be travelling) and for local explorations, some super fun like visiting Niagara Falls or the Bowmanville Zoo and sometimes it’s for returning our beer bottles and hauling a large grocery run. It was definitely a bit odd having our every move monitored and captured but we’re quite pleased with the end result! What do you think of our Zipcar adventures? Would it work for your lifestyle? Definitely works for us… Saves us quite a bit of money too since we don’t need a car daily.

I loved reading about your adventures. Zipcar sounds really good for people who don’t have a car.

Hi there! We’re debating Zipcar, but we’re often one parent traveling with a double stroller, two babies–and two car seats… too much for one person to carry and load alone. Any suggestions for making that work with one- or two-day rentals? Thank you for your help!

I think it would depend on how old your kids are…are they still in the bucket seat stage? If so it would be just as easy for you to stroll them over and then place them in the Zipcar with no issues. If however you have to push a stroller and drag two car seats alone, that might be a problem, logistically. Is there someone who can watch the kids while you go and bring the car to your building?
