Baby’s First Professional Haircut | Downtown Toronto

Before the cut

The Little Monkey is now 20 months old and while she had her head shaved and her hair trimmed (by both grandmothers!) she was yet to have a decent hairstyle. The wispy strands were getting in her way and she hates having her hair towel dried so I figured it was time to get a decent haircut that wasn’t a fish bowl. I looked around and all the fun spots like MelonHead were in the burbs and a few select spots were towards the East and the West of the city. Nothing in downtown Toronto.

Oh well… I wasn’t taking her to Toni & Guy I knew that much and I needed someone who would be willing to cut a crying toddler’s hair. I knew she’d be cranky. Well as luck would have it I went in post lunch rush to Top Cuts just down the street and there was a lovely lady who was willing to attempt it. I later found out that she has a two year old grandson so her patience was explained! Oh and if you’re wondering, yes I was braving this first haircut all by myself! I had no backup personnel on standby for entertainment.

Despite being greeted with a lollipop the little one started crying and the lovely stylist recommended that I sit down and keep her on my lap. Sure thing! I was draped in the traditional salon garb and a towel was wrapped around the little one. I had informed the stylist that I was fine with anything but a bowl cut and she warned me that there wasn’t much that can be done with a crying toddler with such little hair. Fair enough… get to work stylist. You are the professional after all!

Luckily for us the Little Monkey enjoys watching videos and pictures of herself so I was able to put the collection on my phone to good use (and make some shoddy videos whilst there myself!). The crying soon stopped but the an occasional whine would leak out. The lollipop in my hand was now covered in hair as was the original chip that was in the little one’s hand. No worries. The Stylist continued to do her thing and was patiently calling out the passing street cars, the rain (spray from the water bottle) and giving a pretty decent cut. All in all I went in with the lowest of expectations and was absolutely thrilled by the kindness and patience we received from the lovely lady. I told her we’ll be back for all future cuts for the Little Monkey!

Ofcourse the hubs wasn’t thrilled that we’d butchered her hair, but I say it’ll grow out soon enough and this time around there will be a bit of style, structure and form around the mop that will form versus the blob that was floating around before! All I can say is that for under $15, tax and tip in I couldn’t ask for better. Now to open a kid’s salon in downtown Toronto.. that’ll be good business for sure!

There are super/top cuts around the city but this is near bay and dundas. Not sure of the stylists’ name but I hope to go in this evening for a cut so I can ask her! 🙂
