Bad Cuts

kids haircut torontoIt has been a while since I let out a rant here and I guess it’s about  time! You may recall how excited we were for that very first official haircut for Little Monkey. Of course a year and a half has since passed by and we’ve gone in a couple times for a trim. However my challenge has been two fold. One, Little Monkey wants her hair to be “long like Rapunzel’s” and would only let us trim the front. Second, the lady who cut her hair the very first time is no longer there when we visit. I’m at a point where I’m wondering if all kids get bad haircuts! I remember my donkey and bowl cuts all too well.

Up until this past weekend I’ve been allowing Little Monkey to walk around with a bit of a messy mop with a trimmed front. However enough was enough! Her hair was getting really messy at the back and huge knots were forming that was driving both her and I absolutely insane.  I had taken her for a cut right before Christmas and the hairstylist insisted that she did her best without being able to trim the back. Her quote was ‘it would look like a mullet if I cut her sides and not the back’. Fair enough! I walked out content that she’d done her best with what she had. Two weeks ago my parents took Little Monkey in for another trim at the very same salon we’ve been taking her to (because it’s only $15 and because it’s across the road from us) and she came back with the usual bowl cut. This time I was annoyed. Her hair looked like a bit of a helmet.

I decided that it was time to convince Little Monkey that she needed a fancy new style that would require the sides and back getting a trim. Surprisingly all it took was ” you’ll get a lollipop if we can cut your hair nicely without crying”. She agreed and this past Sunday the two of us went in and I was thrilled that she was ready to let us cut it all off. She was all smiles and I went in with the intention of asking for a look book for kids but of course this is a cheap place and we didn’t see any lying around. The new stylist was in AGAIN and I told her that since we could now cut the back and sides I expected a stylish look.

Seriously, a bowl cut may have been better. I voiced my concerns and the stylist came back with ‘ it would look like a mullet. I can cut the sides for boys but not girls.”  I wonder if she was trying to tell me politely that Little Monkey has big ears that need covering…either ways I knew she wasn’t going to budge and that it wasn’t my place to tell her how to do her job. One thing I will say is that she said she layered the back so that it would no longer get knotty. Day two and it seems to be working!

I know it will grow out eventually and perhaps it’s time for me to find another salon and dish out a couple more bucks for a decent style. Anyone got any recommendations for a good downtown Toronto spot?
