Things to Do in Halifax in February: A Practical Winter Guide

As you may know by now, we love visiting Halifax and have experienced every season in Nova Scotia. This year a friend and I spent a few days in Halifax in February and despite it being cold and windy, we had such a great time. February might be one of the quietest months to visit Halifax, but that’s exactly what makes it appealing. With fewer crowds and a slower pace, winter reveals a more local side of the city.

Disclosure : This post is in partnership with Discover Halifax but, as always, opinions are TOTALLY ours.

While temperatures are colder, Halifax doesn’t shut down in winter. Museums, restaurants, breweries, and theatres operate year-round, and many of the city’s most popular neighbourhoods remain walkable even in February. As long as you’re willing to dress for the weather, visiting Halifax in winter offers a practical, low-key way to experience Nova Scotia’s capital without the summer rush.

What Is Halifax Like in February?

A Practical Winter Guide to Halifax in Winter

I’m not going to lie, February in Halifax is cold, so layers and proper winter boots are a must. As a coastal city, it can also feel windier than expected, especially along the waterfront. That said, the city is especially beautiful this time of year, with a quieter waterfront and snow-dusted streets that feel calm rather than busy.

One of my favourite parts of visiting in February is the spontaneity. With fewer visitors in town, it’s much easier to score last-minute dinner reservations or walk straight into some of the city’s most popular restaurants and bars that are often booked solid in spring and summer. Halifax also hosts the Dine Around program in February so you can savour special menus from some of the best Halifax restaurants and they’re priced between $10-60!

February is a great time for a winter girls’ trip to Halifax and for travellers who prioritize food, culture, and walkable neighbourhoods over packed itineraries.

Here’s what we got up to in February on a winter girls’ trip to Nova Scotia.

Indoor Things to Do in Halifax in February

Winter in Halifax is the perfect excuse to slow down and focus on experiences that are best enjoyed indoors. February, in particular, lends itself well to food, art and wellness which makes it very easy to fill your Halifax girls’ trip without worrying about the weather.

Relax at the Halifax Wine Spa

girls at the wine spa in Halifax

One of the most indulgent ways to spend a winter afternoon is at the Wine Spa, where you can sip Nova Scotian wines as you enjoy spa services. There’s a sommelier onsite and they provide complimentary snacks, making it a fancy and cozy Halifax winter activity. Upon arrival we removed our snow covered boots and slid into slippers provided by the spa before saddling up to the bar. Yes-a bar! Our aesthetician had us fill a form so they knew exactly what our skin needed and she then brought out the products each of us required. Step by step they poured things for us to lather on our faces and brought along warm facial towels to open our pores . All while the resident sommelier paired local Nova Scotian wines to go with each step of our facial and we snacked on chips and candy. Fun huh? Whether you’re planning a solo winter escape or a girls’ trip in Halifax, this is the kind of experience that feels both restorative and uniquely local. Make Your Own Perfume at The 7 Virtues

Another standout indoor experience (particularly fun during winter) is making your own custom fragrance at The 7 Virtues Atelier. Their hands-on perfume-making workshops invites you to blend a scent to take home using ethically sourced ingredients.  The sessions are timed but one of the perks of visiting Halifax in the winter is that things aren’t as busy and you may idle a bit longer than usual. This is how we ended up spending 2 hours here sipping tea, nibbling on biscuits and going back and forth between scents! The staff here are incredibly knowledgeable and guide you through the process, allowing you to first spray their collection to see which notes you like. You then get to blend things (using pipettes and apothecary jars) until you’re happy and if there’s certain notes you dislike, you can start again or they’ll tell you how to balance things out. In the end I left with a personalized bottle with a label (thinking about a name for my perfume wasn’t easy). Their perfume is clean with sustainably sourced ingredients that are vegan, cruelty free and hypoallergenic. It’s a memorable activity that works well for a winter girls’ trip itinerary or anyone looking for something more interactive beyond shopping or sightseeing (though those are also solid options for your Halifax itinerary).

Visit Museums and Galleries

Maud lewis house at Halifax art gallery

Museums and galleries are open year-round, making February an ideal time to explore places like the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 or the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia without the crowds. These attractions are easy to visit at a relaxed pace and often feel more enjoyable when you’re not navigating summer lineups. For art and culture, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is open year-round and offers a thoughtful mix of contemporary exhibitions, regional art and permanent collections that highlight Atlantic Canada’s creative voices. Visiting in February means you can take your time, linger in the galleries and actually enjoy the space without summer crowds. I’ve also experienced the Parks Canada Halifax Citadel in the winter time and while part of the actual attraction offer an indoor and  outdoor experiences, doing a winter distillery experience is a fun indoor activity during the 2026 winter season. Also, if this is your first visit to Halifax and you’re intrigued by all things related to the Titanic, you MUST pop into the Maritime Museum of  the Atlantic.

Explore Halifax’ Restaurant and Bar Scene

Halifax’s food and drink scene also shines in winter. February is perfect for lingering over chowder, seafood or a long brunch. With fewer visitors in town, it’s easier to pop in without a reservation or book a table at spots that are notoriously busy during peak season. Many local Halifax restaurants participate in Dine Around, a winter dining event that offers prix-fixe menus and makes it easier to try some of the city’s most popular spots. Restaurants like Dear Friend, The Press Gang, Café Lunette, and Au Liban are especially appealing in winter, when reservations are easier to secure and meals feel unhurried. From refined comfort food to globally inspired dishes, winter dining in Halifax is all about warmth, flavour and atmosphere.

Evenings in February are ideal for exploring Halifax’s cocktail bars, which shine during the winter months. Doesn’t hurt that the sun does set a bit earlier so you can pop in for a few responsible drinks and still be back in your hotel room by 9 p.m.! Bar Sofia offers a stylish space for creative cocktails, while The Peacock Wine Bar is perfect for lingering over a glass of wine on a cold night. Bar Kismet, often named among Canada’s best bars, is an essential stop for anyone interested in Halifax’s food and drink scene and The Narrows Public House delivers a more laid-back, neighbourhood vibe that feels especially welcoming in winter.

Taken together, these indoor experiences highlight why Halifax is such a great Canadian winter travel destination. From wellness and art to dining and cocktails, February offers a quieter, more relaxed way to experience the city. It truly is one of the best times to experience what Halifax offers indoors

Outdoor Winter Experiences in Halifax

Halifax waterfront in winter

Winter in Halifax may be cold, but February still offers plenty of outdoor experiences that are worth bundling up for.  Yes, even if you’re not into hardcore winter sports! If you enjoy fresh air, coastal scenery and a slower pace of travel, winter in Halifax will delight you. You can easily duck into shops and indoor places if it gets too cold or windy but as long as you’re layered up, have great boots and all the cute winter accessories (hates, gloves, scarves), you’ll have a great time exploring these outdoor winter activities in Halifax.

Walk the Halifax Waterfront in Winter

The Halifax Waterfront takes on a completely different character in February. Without cruise ships or tour groups, the boardwalk feels calm and open, making it ideal for a winter walk. Snow-dusted views of the harbour, historic buildings and ships create a dramatic coastal backdrop that’s especially striking in winter. Even a short stroll offers a sense of place and perspective that’s hard to match during busier seasons. Don’t forget there’s many boutiques along the boardwalk if you feel like getting your shopping on!

Take the Ferry to Dartmouth

One of the simplest and most rewarding outdoor experiences during winter travel in Halifax is taking the ferry to Dartmouth. It operates year-round and offers sweeping views of the Halifax skyline and harbour, even on colder days. The ferry ride itself feels like an experience rather than just transportation, and it’s an easy way to enjoy East Coast Canada’s coastal scenery without committing to a long outdoor excursion. You can also stay warm and cozy in the indoor cabin! When in Dartmouth, there’s plenty of shopping and bar hopping options so you can pop in to warm up in-between those outdoor strolls.

Explore Halifax’s Neighbourhoods on Foot

February is a great time to explore Halifax’s neighbourhoods at a relaxed pace. Areas like Downtown Halifax and the North End remain walkable in winter and the cooler weather makes popping in and out of cafés, shops and galleries feel natural. With fewer people around, it’s easier to notice small details. Details like historic architecture, colourful storefronts and local businesses that give the city its character. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to chat with the store owners and hear their stories.

Here’s a list of places to go shopping in Halifax.

Visit the Halifax Public Gardens in Winter

While best known for summer blooms, the Halifax Public Gardens are still worth visiting in the winter. In February, the gardens feel peaceful and almost storybook-like, especially after a snowfall. Pathways, trees and wrought-iron gates create a quiet space for reflection, offering a slower, more contemplative way to enjoy one of Halifax’s most iconic green spaces.

Go Skating at the Emera Oval

One of the more popular winter activities in Halifax is skating at the Emera Oval, an outdoor rink located on the Halifax Common. Open throughout the winter, the Oval offers free skate and helmet rentals, making it an easy and accessible winter activity even if you didn’t plan ahead. Skating here feels distinctly local and is a great way to embrace winter in Halifax, whether you’re travelling solo, with friends or planning a low-key winter getaway in Nova Scotia.

What’s Open in Halifax During Winter?

Things to do in Halifax in winter

One of the biggest misconceptions about visiting Halifax in February is that everything shuts down. It’s totally not the case. Most museums, theatres, restaurants and breweries operate year-round (though some may have slightly reduced hours). Downtown Halifax, the Waterfront and Dartmouth remain active neighbourhoods with plenty of places to eat, shop and explore.

Winter is also when Halifax feels most local. Without cruise ships and tour groups, you’re more likely to see residents filling restaurants, attending shows or meeting friends for a casual meal. For travellers who enjoy experiencing a city with a chance to chat with locals, February offers a refreshingly authentic way to visit.

Where to Stay in Halifax for a Winter Visit

Halifax offers a variety of places to stay that make winter travel comfortable and convenient. Having visited Halifax in the winter on numerous occasions and stayed in different areas of the city, I can attest to the fact that location is important.  In February, when temperatures are colder and the days are shorter, choosing the right hotel can make a big difference in how you experience the city. Most of the best options are downtown or along the waterfront, which means easy access to indoor activities, restaurants, museums and winter walks along the harbour. So if you’re planning a Canadian winter trip to Halifax or even exploring winter girls trip ideas in East Coast Canada, a well-located hotel helps you make the most of your time. Below are three standout hotels that offer comfort, character and excellent access to the city’s top winter experiences.

Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel

Marriott Harbourfront Halifax Hotel

Situated right on the Halifax Waterfront, the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel puts you steps from scenic harbour views, lively dining spots and the boardwalk. I really like their location for convenience and their room layouts. They are also one of the few downtown Halifax hotels with a pool.

Why it’s great for winter travel:

  • Waterfront location: Easy access to winter waterfront walks, ferry rides to Dartmouth and seasonal light displays.

  • Comfort and convenience: Spacious rooms with views of the harbour help you relax after a day exploring all the things to do in Halifax in February.

  • On-site amenities: When you want to stay warm, the hotel’s indoor spaces (pool, lounges and dining options)make it easy to unwind without venturing far. They even have pods to work from, if you’re planning to sneak in a conference call or some email catch ups during your Halifax girls’ trip.

The Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites

Lord Nelson Suites

A Halifax classic, The Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites is a historic, full-service hotel located close to Halifax’s major museums, theatre and shopping areas. While their rooms don’t have that modern feel I prefer, I do appreciate the suite layouts here because it’s nice to have a communal lounge area with separate bedrooms when you’re enjoying a girls’ trip to Halifax. It also feels very regal staying at a property filled with historic charm.

Why it’s great for winter travel:

  • Historic charm: Elegant rooms and traditional décor make winter nights feel cozy and special. Perfect for a winter girls’ trip or a Canadian getaway filled with culture.

  • Central Halifax location: Easy walking distance to many indoor things to do in Halifax, from galleries and museums to winter dining.

  • Relaxed atmosphere: The Lord Nelson is known for attentive service and a welcoming feel, making it a great choice if you want to retreat to somewhere warm and cozy after exploring the city.

The Sutton Place Hotel Halifax

A relative newer entry among Halifax’s top hotels, The Sutton Place Hotel Halifax sits in the heart of downtown within walking distance of elevated restaurants, cocktail bars, shopping and the waterfront. If you’re looking for a stylish hotel for your girls trip in Halifax this is the spot I’d choose.

Why it’s great for winter travel:

  • Modern luxury: Contemporary design and high-end amenities make this a standout choice for travellers seeking comfort and style in colder months.

  • Proximity to food & nightlife: From brunch to winter dinners and late-night cocktails, many of Halifax’s best indoor dining and bar experiences are close by.

  • Walkable winter base: The central location is perfect for exploring indoor and outdoor attractions in Halifax without needing to rely on transit or driving in wintry weather.

What to Pack for a February Trip to Halifax

girls winter trip to halifax

Packing well makes all the difference when visiting Halifax in February. Winter in Halifax can be cold, windy and temperamental, especially along the waterfront. Focus on comfort and flexibility when you’re packing for your Halifax winter trip. With the right layers and footwear, exploring the city in winter is not only manageable, it’s enjoyable.

A warm, wind-resistant winter coat is essential, particularly one that can handle coastal gusts and occasional wet weather. Halifax’s winter temperatures can fluctuate, so layering pieces like sweaters, thermal tops and insulating mid-layers allow you to adjust throughout the day as you move between indoor and outdoor activities.

Waterproof winter boots with good traction are a must, especially if you plan to walk along the waterfront, explore neighbourhoods on foot or visit outdoor spaces after snowfall. Sidewalks are generally well maintained, but having footwear that can handle slush and icy patches will make your trip far more comfortable. My Vessi boots handle the Halifax winters well and keep my feet nice and toasty.

Accessories matter more than you might expect. A hat, gloves and scarf go a long way in keeping you warm during winter walks, ferry rides and evenings out. If you’re planning to skate at the Emera Oval or spend extended time outdoors, packing extra layers like thermal socks is a smart move.

Finally, don’t forget casual indoor clothing suitable for cozy dining, museum visits and cocktail bars. Halifax’s winter vibe leans relaxed and many of the city’s best experiences in February happen indoors, where comfort and warmth are just as important as style.

With the right packing strategy, winter travel in Halifax feels less about braving the cold and more about enjoying a slower, cozier way to experience the city.

We hope this Halifax winter guide has helped you plan your winter getaway this year!
