Niagara-on-the-Lake might be small, but deciding what to do here is surprisingly overwhelming. Many visitors look for things to do in Niagara on the Lake for one afternoon or evening after they visit Niagara Falls, so I totally get it!

Between wineries, incredible restaurants, historic sites and seasonal events, it’s the kind of place where you could visit multiple times and have a completely different experience each time. I speak from experience because my parents own a Bed and Breakfast in Niagara on the Lake and we visit frequently.

If You Want Unique & Hidden Experiences in Niagara on the Lake

Secret spots in Niagara on the Lake

Beyond the main strip and popular wineries, there’s a quieter, more local side of Niagara-on-the-Lake that’s just as worth exploring.

Think:

  • Smaller, lesser-known wineries
  • Peaceful corners away from the crowds
  • Spots you don’t just “stumble into” unless you know they’re there (ever think you’d go swimming a quick drive from a winery?)
  • Be active – if you don’t want to commit to a full day of sports you can still shoot/hit some balls or play a quick round of golf.

These are the kinds of places that make you feel like you’ve discovered something. So if you want to skip the obvious and find the good stuff… Read my Hidden Gems in Niagara-on-the-Lake article

Planning a Weekend Getaway?

best niagara on the lake itinerary

If you’re staying overnight (something I highly recommend if you plan to fully experience the area), Niagara-on-the-Lake really starts to shine.

You’re not rushing between stops(though if you’re like me, you might still rush to do more). You actually get to enjoy those long meals and spontaneous detours which is where memories are truly made.

But figuring out how to fit everything in? That’s where it gets tricky.  If you don’t want to overthink it, I’ve already mapped it out for you. Follow this 2-day Niagara-on-the-Lake itinerary.

It’s exactly how we plan a perfect weekend for our visiting friends.

Visiting in Winter?

Niagara on the Lake Winter Activties

Winter in Niagara-on-the-Lake is completely different. It’s definitely quieter, cozier and underrated. We spend every other Christmas at my parents’ bed and breakfast and have also experienced the Icewine festival that takes places at the start of each year.

Expect:

  • Twinkling lights and holiday vibes (I love visiting the winery and hotel lobbies during the holidays)
  • Icewine experiences
  • Snowy winery views
  • A slower, more relaxed pace

Here’s exactly what to do in winter in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Visiting Niagara-on-the-Lake with Kids

Murphys at Niagara on the Lake patio

This is the question I get a lot: Is Niagara-on-the-Lake actually worth visiting with kids?

Short answer: yes…with the right expectations.

This isn’t a high-energy, amusement park kind of destination. But if your kids enjoy exploring, being outdoors and (very importantly) good food stops—it works really well.

Here’s what’s been a hit for us:

✔️ Fort George National Historic Site

It’s one of those places that ends up being way more engaging than you expect. There are open spaces to explore and the history is interactive enough to keep tweens interested.

✔️ Biking Along the Niagara Parkway

Easy, scenic and flexible. You can go as far (or not far) as you want, with plenty of places to stop along the way. You can rent bikes for an hour (or more) if you didn’t bring your own.

✔️ Ice Cream & Snack Stops on Queen Street

This alone can carry a good part of your day. There’s something about letting kids pick their own treats while wandering-keeps mine from whining (as much). There’s an old candy store on the main strip and my kids love the small arcade at the back and there’s apple fritters, stuffed chimneys and ice cream shops galore – all along Queen street.

✔️ Waterfront Walks

Wide open space, fresh air and room to run around to balance out any winery visits that required the kids to be on their best behaviour. Definitely visit Ryerson Park (especially at sunset).

✔️ Roam the Butlers Barracks

My kids enjoy that being lost in the woods feeling so they run around here freely and  pop into the small playground and climb the cannon that’s still in place. This is a historically important area maintained by Parks Canada and an easy activity for your list of free things to do in Niagara on the Lake.

✔️ Visit Kid Friendly Wineries, Distilleries, Breweries and Cider Houses

You’d be surprised to learn that there’s a brewery with a ping pong table, a distillery with a pool table, cider houses with gardens and wineries with ample areas for kids to hangout at.

Quick List: Classic Things to Do in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Swimming in Niagara on the Lake

If it’s your first visit, these are the must-do experiences that give you a feel for the town:

  • Stroll along Queen Street and browse local shops
  • Visit one (or a few) wineries
  • Catch a show at the Shaw Festival
  • Walk along the waterfront near Lake Ontario
  • Bike along the Niagara Parkway
  • Stop for coffee, wine or ice cream (ideally all three)

You don’t need to do everything because this is more of a “choose your vibe” kind of destination.

Easy Day Trip from Toronto

One of the best things about Niagara-on-the-Lake is that it’s an easy escape from the city. Many friends add it as a stop before or after Niagara Falls or if they want something charming and relaxing.

Just about a 1.5-hour drive from Toronto, it’s perfect for:

  • A spontaneous summer day trip
  • A fall foliage outing
  • Or even a last-minute weekend plan

That said, if you can stay overnight, do it. The evenings here are just as good as the daytime. Here’s some other day trip  from Toronto ideas.

Choosing the Right Niagara-on-the-Lake Experience

Off the beaten path Niagara on the Lake Ryerson Park

The best way to experience Niagara-on-the-Lake really depends on what kind of trip you’re looking for.

  • Coming for the food? Plan ahead.
  • Want something unique? Go beyond the main spots.
  • Staying overnight? Follow a structured itinerary.
  • Visiting in winter? Lean into the slower pace.

The good news is there’s no wrong way to do it.

And once you’ve been, you’ll probably already be planning your next trip back.
