Last evening the hubs and I took Baby Boy to check out Taste of Toronto which goes on all weekend long. This family friendly event is definitely a good one to take little ones to as there’s plenty of grass for little ones to run around and to ‘picnic’ at. Hosted at Fort York, the space was stroller friendly yesterday as it wasn’t overly busy but as with any big event baby wearing may be the best option. Line ups weren’t bad but of course some spots had a 20 minute wait.
We Hailo-ed our way there and really appreciated our choice to do so because there was a bit of a walk up from the parking to the entrance and our Hailo was able to drop us off right at the gate. While there’s only one entrance, there’s two exits and if you’re catching a cab the exit at the opposite end (towards Bathurst St.) is a better bet on the way out.
With over 50 exhibitors and 16 restaurants (not to mention some pop ups) there’s plenty to sample, drink and eat. You do need to top off your Taste cards to redeem the ‘crowns’ for food at the restaurants but most of the other vendors use cash. Challenge is that you can’t combine cards and with most plates costing between 6-10 crowns you may end up with 2 or 4 crowns on the card if you don’t plan your eating strategy. Should this happen the Wines of Australia booth accepts crowns and is only 4 crows per sample! Of course don’t fret too much if you don’t use up your crowns because any unused ones are being donated to Second Harvest. Whilst non the ideal scenario as you can’t pool the cards together, most families would want to get 2 cards so parents can divide and conquer some of the lines.
There’s plenty of workshops/classes and even an ice cream one for kids aged 6-10 years. Head out and enjoy the first annual Taste of Toronto. General tickets are $30 and kids under 5 are free (between 6 and 15? tickets cost $15). We received complimentary admission tickets and the Hubs and I spent about $80 between us on top. Here’s a tip… if you’re on Twitter, Tweet food pictures to Amex Canada with #DineWithAmex and you may just win some crowns! We were lucky to win some during our visit.
Baby Boy was eager to sample everything from the Canadian Cheese to Byblos’ Basturma and Cheese Acharuli and he loved Mark McEwan’s Fried Chicken. As for me … Splendido’s Salmon, JaBistro’s Blowtorched Sushi and Barque Smokehouse’s wings were my favourites!
It’s been a long Fashion Friday post but we wanted to share some tips for this weekend’s event. Check out what Baby Boy wore to the event!

Was the food amazing? $80 sounds like a lot for me to spend, but if it was a great experience, maybe for once. 🙂

August 17, 2014 at 9:41 pmAgreed, it was a bit pricey but if you go in a group it’s a bit easier on the wallet as you get to sample more dishes and then costs even out I find. Also depends a lot on how much one spends on an average dinner out. Try to win some tickets next year!
