Foodie finds under one cold roof

One of  the things I  love most about Toronto is the multicultural mosaic that makes this city so vibrant. One of the most important aspects of this  cultural make up is the diversity in cuisines that is available throughout Toronto. The latest fad is the pop up food shops, trucks and events throughout the city, especially in the downtown core. Ofcourse I’m all about checking them out.

Having heard many a thing about last year’s Toronto Underground Market (TUM) I was super eager to attend the first one of 2012. Being pregnant last year I decided to pass on the events last year (figured there’d be too many tempting items I “shouldn’t” really be eating. So this year I  was up bright and early and secured a couple tickets. The original plan was to take the Little Monkey with us…using the Bjorn not the stroller (obviously). However a couple hours after purchasing the “all ages” event tickets I was informed that there was an error and it was 18+. Sigh. Our usual babysitters were also joining us for the event. Luckily a friend came to our rescue and off we went.

Unfortunately for us it happened to be the coldest day ever! EVER! Not only were  we freezing (yes I was jogging  between places and jumping whilst standing in line- to no avail) but sadly most dishes were cold by the time we got them in hand and put them in our mouths. Less than 5 minutes between the two actions. Had I known that this year TUM was going to have monthly events I most definitely would have waited to try it out in the summer. My reco would be to forgo the winter ones ( if it’s held at an outdoor venue) if you have the option, especially since most of the vendors remain the same (and many offer the same dishes as Yelp reviews have illustrated). I love the fact that most of the vendors were flying under the radar for the  most part, many communicate through Twitter but have minimal info on their websites (if they even have one that is!)

That said, here are some of our favourite  finds !

Macaroons of every imaginable flavour from the Sweetest Secret
Delicious cupcakes from Sassy Lamb (Vegan Coriander Girl, Canadian Mancake with bacon and Eyeopener with Mill St brew and espresso were my faves!)
Chilli sauce from One of Kind Foods

Very odd chicken and waffles from the Royal Tree Beaver- kept us warm and 10% of the proceeds went to fight against ALS

A big thanks to the  Comida del  Peuble dudes who kept us warm with some complementary mulled wine (of sorts) whilst we stood in line. I know most of you might be surprised that the La Carnita tacos aren’t featured here. Having heard amazing things about this pop up shop’s fares , we stood in line for nearly an hour despite being one of the first  100 people to enter the  venue and being the first place we dashed to. However by the time I got the food in my mouth… it was cold and a bit disappointing.  I will try them again at a future event, just to confirm that the taco’s aren’t just hyped up.

All in all a great event and I hope to see more of these. Supporting hidden talents and small shops are great, especially when they dish out some delicious goodies. I was glad we got the tickets as it allowed us  to attend the event from 5 to 8 p.m. before the doors/tickets opened to the general public. Our group was beyond freezing by 8 p.m and so we dashed out to regain sensation in our toes and fingers…only to see people waiting in line to  buy tickets…emm..guys.. most vendors were sold out by then! The good ones at least!  Oh and if you’re wondering we spent about $80 per couple, for tickets, booze and food. We didn’t sample every vendor but tried out atleast half of them between our group of 5 people. See you at a future TUM event!
