All Hail King Julien on Netflix

king_lgo_002_h (2) (Custom)Two weekends ago we were invited to watch a pre-screening of the animated kids show, All Hail King Julien and we had our very first chance to experience a movie theatre as a family. The hubs and I often sneak out for a date night at Cineplex VIP and we’ve been contemplating taking Little Monkey for a movie but Baby Boy was obviously not a movie going candidate just yet. However, when Netflix invited the whole family to spend an afternoon watching a couple episodes we decided to give it a go. There’d be plenty of little ones so we figured we’d be just fine!

all hail king julian Little Monkey had a blast! She sat on her seat (Cineplex has booster seats!!!) and hugged her bag of popcorn and enjoyed the two episodes of King Julien. DreamWorks Animation’s ALL HAIL KING JULIEN, is an all-new Netflix original TV series that will be available starting this Friday.  Julien takes the throne, with Mort, Maurice and a colourful cast of new characters in his court this week when the first five 22-minute episodes arrive to Netflix. A friend of mine had mentioned that this was really for the older kids, so I wasn’t sure how Little Monkey would be at the showing, but she was glued to the screen. I will admit that this is one of those cartoons that has many jokes that the little ones won’t ‘get’ and there isn’t anything necessarily educational about it. There’s a catchy theme song though and plenty of animals that they’ve probably not heard of before.

IMG_20141216_212848If King Julien sounds familiar to you, you’ve probably watched Madagascar… yes it is he. The one and only! We sat at the very front of the middle section which gave us ample leg room and some space for Baby Boy to crawl, stand and do as he pleased. I came armed with extra snacks and so he was entertained with those, his milk bottle and scooting between myself, Little Monkey and the hubs. I was actually pleasantly surprised by how good he was! He’s getting to be quite fun to take out. We brought our double stroller to the Scotia Bank Cineplex and there was an elevator/lift that took us up to the main level and the staff were nice enough to guide us towards an area where we were able to park. I’m guessing this was mainly because it was a private event (they also had coat check for us).

If you’ve got older kids King Julien might be quite fun for them! I plan to show Little Monkey the rest of the episodes over the Christmas break because she seems to like the characters. Not as much as her princesses of course but she needs more than princesses in her life and I need to ensure I encourage that!

What are your kids watching these days?
