Let’s Swap Some Foam for Cash!!!

Foam for cashLiving in downtown Toronto can be expensive but it’s something our family budgets for when we plan our annual expenses. Sure, living costs may be high but we also find plenty of ways to keep costs low. From enjoying free events in the city to finding discounts and deals, we’re always on the hunt for ways to entertain ourselves. As a hardworking family we’re not thrilled when businesses take advantage of us. As you can imagine we weren’t too pleased to hear about a recent price fixing story. However, when we heard that our couch and mattress could possibly get us at least $20, we were intrigued. Say what? We dug a bit deeper and now we’re here to tell you all about the Foam for Cash program.

Disclosure : This post is in partnership with Foam for Cash but, as always, opinions are TOTALLY ours

Here’s the deal. Another price-fixing settlement has come to surface. This one has been many years in the making and there’s a way for Canadians to easily collect their fair share. Between 1999 and 2012, several manufacturers of polyurethane foam products allegedly formed a cartel to fix prices, resulting in inflated costs for Canadian consumers. While there’s nothing wrong with the polyurethane itself, there is an issue with what you paid for it.  The price-fixing cartel resulted in inflated pricing on certain goods. Initially I wasn’t sure what I could have possibly bought that contained polyurethane during that time frame, but the answer is, quite a few things!

What Could Contain Polyurethane In Your Home?

Flexible polyurethane foam refers to a type of foam used in furniture. Think chairs, sofas, cushions, mattresses and carpets. You can make a claim on purchases for any of these products made in Canada that contained flexible polyurethane foam. For example, if you bought a new mattress at some point between 1999 and 2012, a span of more than 10 years, there is a good chance that you are eligible to make a claim.

Who is Eligible for Compensation?

You are automatically a Class Member and can complete a claim form if you:

  • Live in Canada now or you lived in Canada between January 1, 1999 and January 10, 2012; and
  • Bought, in Canada, flexible polyurethane foam, eligible foam products or carpet underlay made in Canada for personal, commercial, or manufacturing use during the same time period.

With the launch of the Foam for Cash campaign, Canadians can now claim what they are owed – a minimum of $20 per household – and send out a strong message that this type of behaviour has serious consequences and that consumers want healthy competition between manufacturers.

As you saw in our video, it took Chris less than 5 minutes to snap some pictures of the labels and submit them online. That was an easy $20 that paid for our family outing last weekend (we didn’t technically receive the $20 but we know it’s coming our way 8-12 months after the claims deadline). If this applies to you, ensure that you file a claim here before February 6th 2018. Just remember that this is only for Canadian made products and that the minimum amount you may be able to claim is $20. You can use the online calculator to determine if you meet the requirements.

At the end of the day, it’s just 20 bucks but the most important thing here is that we let businesses know that they can’t employ illegal practices. We’re also setting an example for our kids and teaching them that the bad guys always get caught!

Go get your $20 today!!
