Easy Halloween Dessert: Skull Strawberries

Chocolate Covered Skull Strawberries

All you need is strawberries, a skull mold (or any other Halloween mold) and a bunch of candy melts. Melting the candy is the messiest part so a double boiler method is probably your best bet. I’ll explain step by step!

Grab your box of strawberries, rinse and let them dry because it’s a key ingredient for this skull strawberries recipe.

Next melt your chocolate. Let’s take a moment here to chat about options. Think about the colour you want for your skull strawberries. I have done white chocolate and I’ve played with candy melts or candy wafers to get orange and red skulls. I found the candy melts to be easier. You can find these at Bulk Barn, Walmart, Michaels and even Amazon.  When it comes to melting the chocolate some brands say to microwave them while other recommend placing the wafers in a bowl that gets placed on top of boiling water.  I tend to do the hot water method more often than not. I get my smallest saucepan and have water boiling in there. Then I turn the heat to low and place the bowl filled with candy melts/wafers or chocolate so that it sits on the top of the pan and absorbs the heat without any water touching the the chocolate/candy. I also add a teaspoon of coconut oil if I feel that the consistency can be smoother. This video shows you exactly what I mean!

Now comes the fun part. Then you can decide how you want your skulls to look. Method one is to first cover your strawberry. Method two is to let your strawberry be bare and only have the skulls on it.

I tend to do method two more often than not for my chocolate skull strawberries because I want my guests to know it’s a strawberry, in case they’re allergic to them like Chris is! If you’re doing method one, grab a skewer and place your strawberry  on it so you can dip and cover the strawberry first (like in the video I shared above).

For both methods you’ll have to pour your melted chocolate/candy into the mold ( use a tablespoon to layer it in) and shove your strawberry into it. Let it cool and then peel away! When it comes to molds, I’ve tried a variety and prefer the silicone ones with smaller designs.

Okay, what do you think of my Halloween strawberries?

Working with chocolate can be hard so remember that it’s Halloween! Things can be messy and don’t need to look perfect!
