Sushi Making for the Soul

IMG_2107

Many who know us, know that we LOVE Sushi! From all you can eat to al la carte affairs we’re at it any chance we get. I’ve been lucky that the hubs also makes pretty good Sushi for us at home. Oh and when I say Sushi, I guess I really mean Maki because the rolls are our favourites. And Sashimi. MMMmmmm.

You may recall a couple months back we visited Yakitori Bar and loved the baby friendly vibe. Owner Sang Kim had a contest where he awarded Facebook Fans with a free level I Sushi Making for the Soul class and the hubs and I both were lucky recipients. We spent a lovely Sunday afternoon learning new tips and tricks, meeting some new folks and basking in Kim’s company.

Sushi Making for the Soul takes place at Yakitori Bar and Sang not only teaches you the techniques and offers an hands on experience  but his vast knowledge also ensures that participants gain an understanding of the history behind Japanese culture and Sushi making traditions. The added history and cultural lessons was definitely greatly appreciated on our end.

Level I was perfect for us because it actually showcased some techniques the hubs hadn’t tried before. There’s some things I like to leave in his court, like laundry, taking the trash and Sushi making. I simply say I’m not good at it and he is. Voila… it’s his duty. Ironically my rolls turned out to be better than his. OpppS!  There goes my strategy! He’s still making Sushi moving forward though!! Priced at $25 for Level I (Makimonos)  and $45 for Level II (Nigiri and Sashimi) it’s a great deal compared to some other deals out there. Learning new skills, getting a history lesson and enjoying the fruits fish of your labour-great way to spend a bonding session. Not to worry Level I has veggie options too! Can’t wait to be able to eat raw fish again to hit up the Level II class!

Maki Making

Ensure there’s good peaks as you set the base. Tight rolling with correct fingers placement.

Hand Roll Making

Angling is key but this is fairly easy to make and lots of fun to eat. Great way to sneak veggies in for kids!

Tip : Sang encourages participants to sit by the bar if possible because that’s where you’ll have the most room to spread out. It’s tight quarters but lots of fun and definitely educational.

Sang is organizing the World’s Largest Sushi Making Class which will take place this fall and will hopefully make it into the Guinness Book of World Records. Sang has been teaching Sushi Making classes in schools (for kids) and has also been doing Skype sessions with kids in Uganda; Sang’s love for children and his love for good, healthy cooking makes him an inspirational host for this program. More details are to follow but from what I have gathered parents can enroll their kids to participate in this ”class” which will be in an open space such as Nathan Philips Square (or Similar.. Dundas Square perhaps?). I’m not certain what the cost would be but all proceeds would be going towards a charitable cause. This will be a 24 hour long event and over 1000 kids are to participate from all over the world (thank you modern technology!). Keep an eye out on Twitter or Facebook for updates as I know Sang will be sharing the details as he fleshes things out.
