Baby’s First Foods

IMG_5563 Two weeks ago Baby Boy enjoyed his first taste of real food just shy of his 5 month birthday! Exciting times! With the Little Monkey we started at the 4 month mark because she showed ALL signs of being ready but when our doctor suggested I start solids at the four month mark for Baby Boy  I hesitated. Why? Because he wasn’t showing us any signs of being ready. He couldn’t even sit up the lazy bugger! The doctor was concerned about him hovering a smidge below the 50% weight range and it didn’t bother me because he was heavier than the Little Monkey was at his age. So I waited….and waited until one day I noticed him smacking his lips. He still couldn’t sit up but I plopped him on the Bumbo and boy was he READY! He had no issues swallowing and barely dribbled anything out. He does a weird thing where he plops his thumb in between feeds – I thought it was a sign that he was done but he started crying when I put the food away!

baby's first solid first foods

I had made cereal AT HOME for the Little Monkey but I knew what a pain it was and how it didn’t taste all that great so we went for the box kind this time around. He ate two tablespoons that first round and my plan was to do one feed daily until the 6 month mark. NOPES. He finished 2 oz of food on his first day. He’s been on solids for nearly 2 weeks now and we’ve adhered to the 3 day rule so far. He’s at it like a champ and would eat more if I gave him the option but I really don’t want him substituting milk and that’s always a fear in the first few days. I’m sure my 3 day rule is going to go out the door once I get through our basics. Below is  a chart of some of our favourite items to start with. You may notice that I stuck to fruits and veggies and the reason for that is because I find meats and fish a bit too stringy even after blending. So I wasn’t comfortable using that for the first two weeks. Perhaps I need a better blender! Other than the Avocado and cereal the rest of the fruits and veggies have been organic (I gave organic fruits, veggies and meats until the Little Monkey was 9 months if memory serves me right…she started eating out quite frequently at that age and the whole organic thing went out the window).

On average each day he goes through one fruit or 10 baby carrots which averages to about 3 to 4 ounces of purees. We’re going to introduce lentils and pulses this week. At present I use breast milk to thin out the purees but will soon start using the water from the steamed fruits and veggies.

We also started foods a tad before 5 months old with doctor recommendation and we feel like it was the right time for us. I have been afraid to do my own purees at home for some reason, I almost feel like it will be too difficult but the jarred food has such little variety that I think I will be doing them now too

I think it is important to start when you think your baby is ready. I made all my own baby foods.

I remember feeding my younger brother his first foods. Finding something he liked was hard, but I loved feeding him.

So my grandbaby has been eating for a few months now and doesn’t like baby food and doesn’t like us feeding her so she has been eating alot of pasta or so I have noticed as we can cut it up for her and she eats it on her own and scrambled eggs! My daughter is nervous to give her toast or anything like that she only has 4 teeth right now and her brother hasd a mouthful by now! My granddaughter will be 11 mos on the 19th of this month 🙂

Each kid is so different huh? Hopefully you’ll discover other soft finger food she could chew on. Mine loved baked tofu cubes and I used to make them super tiny coz she only had 2 teeth
