Ontario Craft Beer Week – Family options

The popularity of craft beer has been spreading through out Canada and I know many beer snobs aficionados are thrilled about the fact that they can now find quality brews at home versus always dipping down to the U.S to hunt them down. I was invited to attend the kick of this year’s Ontario Craft Beer Week on Friday at the newly opened Mill St. Brewpub ( I really do need to go back there for a Tasty Tuesday review! It’s gorgeous!) and while it was a simple gathering of beer suppliers and media, it was a celebratory affair as many recognized how far  Ontario Craft Brewers have come. Back in the 1980s there were ZERO ZILCH NADA craft breweries in Ontario and today the industry is a significant economic contributor, accounting for over 900 jobs being created in 2012 and another 400 slotted for this year, according to Steve Abrams, Mill St. Brewery Co-Founder. In addition Dr. Eric Hoskins, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment acknowledged how skilled and recognized our local craft brewers are and then continued to pour a delicious Pan Ontario collaboration beer brewed at Beau’s All Natural Brewing, blending brews from Beau’s, Flying Monkeys, Great Lakes, Amsterdam, and Wellington. Definitely try and get your hands on a sample during OCBWeek! It’s a lovely barrel-aged creation.

IMG_4925 IMG_4930 OCBWeek runs from June 16 to June 23 featuring 400+ beer-inspired opportunities in 40 Ontario communities, so there’s no shortage of events to hit up. For a full list of events throughout Ontario (and yes I mean THROUGHOUT!) click here. As you know we love exploring craft brews any chance we get and we have no shame in taking our toddler along with us. There are lots of family tolerant events that you won’t get too much of a stink eye for bringing your little one along to (atleast in my opinion). The Beach BBQ and Brews Festival was definitely one such event this past weekend. Here’s a few more I’ve pulled from this week’s Toronto round up. Get out there and enjoy some local craft brews! Especially great for maternity leave moms as some of these events start at earlier (and will be less busy at that time!) Breastfeeding? Here’s my tips and tricks on drinking and breastfeeding, though I’m by no means encouraging it.
