Parenting Tactics | Pie Face! #BornOnTheFarm

gay leaParenting is HARD and there are amazing days and there are days you just want to lock them up in a room (wait just me?) and ignore all the constant whining, yelling and screaming. For whatever reason the last few weeks have been tough ones. Constant dinner battles (which I solved by dining out a bit more!), yelling at them to clean up after their toys (so many TINY toys came along with the birthday celebrations!), bedtime struggles, potty training Baby Boy…honestly every LITTLE thing involved nagging. Especially when it came to Little Monkey. Where’s the fabulous fives everyone promised me?

Instead of fighting the good fight I decided to just let it all go and over the weekend when they said they weren’t ready for bed, I said “Fine. Do what you want but you can’t come out of your room.” That was much easier and there was no stress involved. I relaxed in front of the Tv and they eventually fell asleep on their own. Don’t want to pick up the toys? “Fine. I’ll do it but they’ll end up in the garbage”. That had them cleaning up the place REAL quick! I basically use threats all the time to get anything and everything done. The struggle is real and the struggle is no fun.

Yesterday was supposed to be a relaxing Sunday but with the hubs down with a bout of something or another, I started my afternoon (because they were nice enough to let us sleep in!) with more yelling. I decided to just STOP!  and take a moment to inject some fun into our lives. We had recently received the Hasbro’s Pie Face Showdown game and when Gay Lea first sent it to me my sentiments were closer to “oh we can’t play this with the kids! They already play around with their food and this will encourage them do so even more.” You know what?

We set things up in our living room and just went with it. Mess and all. Definitely have a wet cloth nearby because it can land in the nose and eyes when playing with really young ones. I could tell you about the shenanigans, or I could show you the shenanigans!

Some good laughs were had and it definitely helped lighten the gloomy mood I was in. Laughter really is the best medicine, especially when living with young kids who are on a mission to test your authority and patience! We’ve shared some ways we’ve used Gay Lea’s Real Whipped Cream before and while we love the coconut version, the new Dark Chocolate Caramel whipped cream is now Little Monkey’s favourite! It’s quite popular and is lactose, dairy and gluten free. Just one lick and you can tell that it’s made with real cocoa beans and natural caramel flavour. As you can imagine, while the true winner is the one who doesn’t get creamed, as Little Monkey can attest, losing is pretty sweet too. The girl was licking everything in site that got creamed as she waited impatiently to get PieFaced! The extra kisses I received after I got whip cream on my face may have helped me forget the chaos, stress and pure frustration she caused over the course of the week.

Of course, half way through our fun Baby Boy needed a major diaper change, so reality did set back in rather quickly. However, it was nice to just laugh at ourselves for a bit while the hubs got some much needed rest. They agreed to help me clean up the mess that was our living room, so perhaps all of us taking a break was a wise decision!

LOL. I wonder if this works with surly cranky hormonal teenagers. Guess I am about to find out. TEENAGER, 13, is not pleasant. Maybe laughter and whip cream will do it. Cheaper than therapy which I need.
