During my travels there has been a couple times I wished I had a hand held breast pump and when I discovered the Philips AVENT manual breast pump I knew I needed it. Ironically it was just a few months before Baby Boy weaned himself off that I came by a review of the product. I may not have been able to fully utilize the breast pump but I know many moms who could benefit from this review, which is why I’m writing about this 3 months post breastfeeding. Also we have a giveaway featuring a soothing pack – the Philips AVENT Natural Glass Bottle and a Philips AVENT Soothie.
Disclosure : I am a member of the AVENTMOMSCA team and receive special perks as part of my association but as always, opinions are totally mine.
I’m used to the electric pumps that do the work for me so I wasn’t sure if my hands would hurt with a manual one. I’d have to do the ‘hard work’ after all. This BPA free pump comes with a Natural Philips AVENT bottle, a Natural newborn nipple, a soft, textured massage cushion that encourages natural milk flow and an ergonomic handle for easy operation with just one hand. Oh and the kit also had some breastpads! Quite a few things considering the price point (around the $60 mark). As with many AVENT products, I really liked that the pump was compatible with other Natural and Classic Philips AVENT bottles and storage containers. This meant that I was able to pump into my existing AVENT bottles (yes the ones Little Monkey used as a baby). However unlike my other breast pump I wasn’t able to pump right into the storage bags as the mouth of the pump is larger than most storage bags.
Clean up was fairly easy but I didn’t use it for a long time so I am still curious to see if after prolonged use, the cushion portion would get sticky like some of our other silicone cups and plates get . All components are dishwasher safe so that’s another plus. No tubings or sensitive parts to deal with unlike my double electric pump. Even Little Monkey enjoyed pumping her milk!
This is the pump I’d travel with. Would have made our road trips so much easier and I wouldn’t have had to be chained to a dirty Starbucks bathroom during our drive from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo! It fits into your purse and is very discrete. No noise, unlike with my electric pump. That said… I’d recommend using this for short durations and not on a daily basis long term or if you’re looking to pump a couple time a day for storage purposes. This is also a great pump as you try to wean off and only need to pump for a few seconds at a time and not deal with a bulky contraption.
We also received the Philips AVENT 6 Ounce Breast Milk Storage Bags which we tested and my main issue with these is that they’re difficult to tear off. I ended up ripping quite a few bags before I got the hang of things. It does store a large amount compared to my usual packs and has a nice area to write the details on.

November 19, 2014 at 9:31 pmI am currently breastfeeding but I absolutely hate to pump. Like I rather get ignored than pump haha but I do have to go back to work this time so I will have to suck it up.

November 20, 2014 at 10:24 amAh .. going back to work. The challenges that brings eh? Luckily I didn’t mind pumping but that’s only because I saw results I guess. I did get lazy towards the end with Baby Boy, though. So I know how you feel

November 20, 2014 at 1:28 pmIf there are practical ways to encourage pumping, I think it makes a mom more prone to nurse longer. I tried pumping when I went back to work with my second to last baby, but it wasn’t easy back then, and I just switched to formula. I’d have rather pumped easily/successfully.

November 20, 2014 at 4:58 pmWhat a great giveaway. I’m a huge supporter of natural is better (as long as mom as a good diet of course!) I learned the hard way with my first son, NOT to eat broccoli….that made for a very gasy, miserable night for everyone 🙁
