Escapes in downtown T.O

Many a city dweller often roadtrips their way to the cottages and lakes every summer weekend and yet I have never done the whole ‘cottage thing’.  I know! I really must lose that virginity soon. Instead I spend my weekends in the city looking for things to do. This past weekend we found the perfect balance of foodie delights, great ales and relaxing views all within a twenty minute walk from us.

Enjoying the sun, food, Steam Whistle and tunes

Rock Lobster goodness complements of a GC I won!

First up was a stop into Steam Whistle. Given that it was Doors Open they had their patio in full swing along  with free brewery tours (not as detailed as the regular ones.. I highly recommend taking one if you haven’t! Great deal with the options to collect swag or a case of beer at the end depending on the cost of your ticket). The guys at Steam Whistle are always celebrating something or another and are fabulous at showcasing undiscovered Canadian Talent. There’s always something happening so you know you’ll be in good hands. For Doors Open we got to enjoy some fine live tunes, great Pilsners on their patio and some delicious eats from the likes of  Rock Lobster Food, Fidel Gastro’s, Comida Del Pueblo and Fusia Dog. With plates at an average cost of $5 and bottles at $4…. it was the perfect weather to enjoy some suds and good eats with friends. We had a fabulous lunch whilst soaking in the rays and then cooled off in the air conditioned section inside. They were also celebrating the grand opening of  the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre and kids of all ages (ummm read 3, 30, 60..) were enjoying the model trains and rides on  the small scale steam train. For us this was the perfect spot and I’d definitely be back to enjoy the Steam Whistle Patio and some solid entertainment with a beer in hand.

Staying on the grass. No sand for me. Fooling myself that I’m on holiday

Next up we meandered over to the Harbourfront Centre. Another great  spot with tons of activities happening throughout the year. Though I  must admit that  summer is the best! There’s always various food stalls and culinary celebrations along side music on the world stage. However this time around we discovered the HTO park. One minute you’re walking along side the highway and then BAM! It’s like you’re on holiday in Miami… sand, ladies clad in the tiniest of bikinis and men sporting board shorts tossing frisbees around and enjoying the sun, sand and water. True you can’t swim there but you sure can pretend that you’re on holiday, basking under the yellow beach umbrellas on loungers whilst white sand flows between your toes  (or between your bum in the case of the itsy bitsy polka dot bikini wearers). And you didn’t hear it from me.. but  there’s a Beer Store just down the street and a Rabba across the street. Picnic anyone? Now just ignore the cars whizzing by and the planes overhead. Shh.

It’s the perfect way to have a relaxing afternoon with the family, baby and all. Next time you whine about living downtown and need a mini break..head on down to these two spots. I guarantee you’ll feel relaxed!
