Niagara’s Bird Kingdom with Grandparents

While we were on our romantic getaway exploring the Outaouais region, my parents took the kids for their own little holiday and as you know, we’re huge fans of grandparents being hands on! While Baby Boy and Little Monkey were more than happy to spend the entire weekend roaming around my parent’s Niagara on the Lake B&B, my mom had other plans. She had been waiting for an excuse to visit the Bird Kingdom and given that I am NOT a fan of birds, she and my dad decided to take the kids there without us.

Bird Kingdom is the world’s largest free flying indoor aviary and is located near Niagara Falls. The fact that they’re open all year long makes it a great destination to visit during the cold blistery winter months. The warm indoors and exotic birds and reptiles will have you thinking you’re visiting a tropical destination. There’s over 350 birds at the Bird Kingdom (I seriously would have been freaking out-and not in a good way!!) and it is also home to mammals, reptiles and amphibians who are part of the educational programs. Older kids will definitely learn quite a bit during their visit to the Bird Kingdom.

They arrived mid afternoon on a Saturday in early November and spent two hours exploring the various exhibits. Little Monkey’s favourite was Lorikeet Landing where she was able to feed and interact with the birds. My mom had quite a few (very blurry and shaky) videos of Little Monkey and Baby Boy touching various reptiles and an educator teaching them how to pet the birds and animals gently. The kids had plenty of chances to see the reptiles and birds up-close and that’s not something one gets to experience at most attractions.

I think what really stood out to my parents (and especially my mom who is on potty duty more often than not!) is how easy the space was to navigate with two young kids. There were plenty of spots to sit down and take a break at and the washrooms had everything that was needed to easily change diapers (yes Baby Boy is STILL in diapers!).

My dad told me that the biggest tip he has is to purchase tickets online as you can save a few dollars. Kids under 4 years of age are also free! Given how easily my parents were able to enjoy an afternoon with the grand kids, made me realize that we should encourage the kids to hangout solo with our parents more often!
