Wine county travel : Canada’s Niagara on the Lake

IMG_20131001_231755Last week we shared our whiskey and beer travels in Ireland and this week it’s all about one of Canada’s wine counties, Niagara on the Lake. Clearly as my pregnancy winds down, I’m getting quite antsy for a drink! For me the onset of spring is marked by the annual Wine and Herb trip we embark on ( you can click here to see the posts that speak to the specific wineries and pairings) but what I haven’t shared is the sheer beauty of travelling in Niagara on the Lake.

Just an hour and a half from downtown Toronto Niagara on the Lake is so accessible for us concrete dwellers and I love that we don’t have to go far to enjoy fine wine and the ambiance of wineries. I don’t know why, but I associate wineries with feminine characteristics while I associate breweries and distilleries with masculine traits; The charm, sophistication and sexyness of a winery is probably the reason many a wedding is hosted in Niagara on the Lake.

We’ve travelled to the wine region with our toddler (and when she was a baby as well) and the love and attention she received at the wineries and B&Bs is quite surprising. The quaint small town feel of the area makes it very family friendly, despite the focus being on alcohol. I’m a firm believer that you can enjoy your alcohol responsibly while travelling with a young family. As you can see.. even “Bun” the bunny made his rounds!

Over the years I’ve got quite a collection of Instagram shares that actually capture the area, the vegetation and scenic beauty (of course I have waaaaaaaay more Instagrams about the wine and food from the region!) so I thought it fitting to share these travel pictures as part of #IGTravelThursday. For anyone visiting Toronto, visiting Ontario’s wine region is definitely called for, no matter what season it may be. Niagara on the Lake is gorgeous from spring to fall but there’s something to be said about cozywinters in a winery. The area is filled with award winning B&Bs  and some wineries have accommodations on site as well – tres romantic!

Great photos! Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of my favourite places to visit and yet I’ve never been to one of the wineries. I really should do something about that!

Ontario itself has two major regions – Niagara on the Lake and then Prince Edward County on the opposite end. British Columbia has a whole bunch more… more travels for you!

I still have not yet been to Canada. And I had no idea they had such great wine areas. One day….one day I’ll get there.

Beautiful photos! I didn’t realize Canada had great wineries like this. I’d love to visit some one day. I’m in the last trimester of my pregnancy also and am looking forward to enjoying good wine again!
