Social media and theft protection with ESET

Last month I introduced you to the ESET dude  and I’m happy to report that the relationship is going well, so much so that we’ve now made it official on social media and he’s offering me protection there as well! Social media protection is a hot topic especially amongst parents and while the little one is still quite young, I’m one of those odd parents that opened a Facebook account  two hours after the Little Monkey was born. Yes I know the legal age is 13 but for various reasons we wanted her to have her own account which is filled with pictures and weekly updates manned by yours truly.

This isn’t the first time you’ve heard about securing your social media accounts, in fact everyone’s being hammered by this message but it can get confusing and there’s many boxes to tick and untick. I found this article  helpful as a comprehensive guide of setting privacy controls on Facebook and Twitter and discovered some good tips on tightening the security even further on the Little Monkey’s account. Even with all her security levels in check, it’s quite interesting that she, like I,  get glitchy virus filled links posted by some of our friends and family. Surely my friends wouldn’t pass bad links…right? Well… ESET dude exposed some of these friends who unknowingly posted spam links on my page. ESET provides a free tool called Social Media Scanner that can scan your Facebook and Twitter accounts and even sends you an email if/when you receive messages and feeds from malicious objects. A very cool feature and one that someone like me, who lives on social media, definitely appreciates.

The other part I’m really loving is the mobile  anti-theft features. I often give myself mini heart attacks because I’m constantly misplacing my phone and after reading  a recent survey  I know I’m even more susceptible to theft. Apparently 12% of stolen devices are from an airport, train, bus, or other public transportation, and 11% from a restaurant or coffee shop….all places I (a bit of a scatterbrain) frequent on a near daily basis. My brother and hubs are always on my case to install anti-theft software on my phone but I didn’t have anything on my tablet or computer. This is where ESET stepped in with the anti-theft programs that help you find misplaced devices by sounding a siren or tracking its GPS coordinates. As a last resort it can lock the devices to prevent access to your sensitive data.

There’s quite a few free products that ESET offers to help us enjoy technology and keep us exploring. Best of all everything only requires an initial setup and then you don’t have to do anything (which I like… I’m lazy yo!) as the ESET dude takes over and you just have to say yes or no to his questions!
