Riverdale Farm with Baby

riverdale farm,IMG_20130805_140339For today’s Travel Thursday feature we’re going to be a tourist in our own city and travel locally with the toddler. Riverdale Farm is in danger of being shut down (you can read about it here) and for us city dwellers in Toronto with kids, that’s a real shame. The convenience of being able to take a leisurely weekend stroll to pet some animals and teach the little ones about the farm without having to travel far is definitely a huge perk families will miss out on.

Riverdale Farm is a community and when you step into the Cabbagetown area you definitely see the love for the farm. It is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. and admission is free of charge! Can’t beat that eh? Donations are welcomed ofcourse.  I was surprised to learn that Riverdale Farm sits on the same property as the original Riverdale Zoo, the Zoo ofcourse moved out of the city (remember this post of ours with all the BUMS) in 1974. Since 1978 Riverdale Farm has been pleasing families such as ours.

As part of Skimbaco’s #IGTravelThursday I’ve used Instagram photos to share our leisurely day at the farm. While we walked over, I couldn’t help noticing that there was a parking garage nearby and a splash pad. Plenty of washrooms with change facilities and for us an hour walking around the trails, seeing the animals and teaching some new words was just the perfect lazy Sunday afternoon. The Discovery walks takes you to a quiet pond or to a bridge over the DVP which takes you to Riverdale Park East. Very stroller friendly, though some of the sheds are fairly small  – be sure to navigate through quickly if it’s a busy time. The discovery walks can be a bit bumpy with rough terrain but still stroller accessible.

Pigs, horses, birds of all sorts, cows , donkeys and goats will entertain you and your little ones!

Too bad it may shut down. What cute little animals. Thanks for linking up with us this week.

That’s really a shame if it does end up getting shut down. It’s so important for attractions like these to exist, that provide an alternative to those considerably pricier ‘tourist attractions’ like the Toronto Zoo.

I love visiting animal farms with our toddler, she gets so excited by all that she sees and experiences. Too bad there are no free ones around here… I hope the farm will not shut down, it sounds like an amazing place to spend a day with kids!

I really hope that it doesn’t get shut down. My brother lives near there and I want to take my son when he can walk for longer periods.
